RAF Conningsby Visit
A dozen Air Cadets from 209 (West Bridgford) Squadron have visited the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
The Cadets were shown around the Spitfires, Hurricanes and a Lancaster bomber and were given the background and history of each individual aircraft. This included the last ever Hurricane built and the only surviving Spitfire from the Battle of Britain. The aircraft were under going major serving before their display season starts and so the Cadets were able to see the inner workings of each aircraft.
After eating lunch in the Junior Ranks Mess they visited 29® Squadron which is the training squadron for the RAF’s latest fighter, the Eurofighter Typhoon. The Cadets were shown the latest technology in the Typhoon’s cockpit and given a guided tour of all the equipment the Typhoon carries in its wings and fuselage. Also in the hanger at the time was an English Electric Lighting that was about to be painted to become the Sqn’s Gate Guardian.
Cadet Mitchell Ward (13) said of the trip ‘It was interesting seeing all the inner working of the aircraft in the Memorial Flight but I really enjoyed looking in the Typhoon’s cockpit,”
