Cadets Eat, Sleep And Set Fires Together

A dozen Air Cadets from 209 (West Bridgford) and 1936 (Newton) Sqns have spent a weekend working on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The Cadets had to complete 7 hours of planned activity on both days and camp out overnight.  The activities included hiking, navigating, map reading and tent building.  All the activities had to be completed without supervision, the Adult Staff only being there to assess the Cadets performance.

The Cadets were camped at the John Lee Wood site in Leicestershire.  Once they’d learned the first and most important lesson of navigation which is never trust an Officer with a map, they were soon on their way on the correct route.  They were met by Staff at check points along the route completing the course in just over seven hours.  Then it was back to the campsite to prepare their own meals and get a fire going.

Cadet Stephanie Willett of 209 Sqn said of the weekend “It was good experience and we all got a lot out of it.  It certainly helped to build up my stamina.”
