The thrill of gliding
Four Air Cadets from 209 (West Bridgford) Sqn got to enjoy the thrill of gliding when they visited 644 Volunteer Gliding Sqn (VGS) at RAF Syerston.
The VGS’s are the Air Training Corps gliding schools and are equipped with modern high performance gliders. Many of the Glider Pilots are former Cadets whose first experience of flying was with a VGS.
644 VGS is equipped with the motorised Vigilant Glider. The Vigilant is able to take off and land using its own power. Once airborne it performs like a glider and is an excellent way of being introduced to learning how to fly.

Each flight is designed to give the Cadet practical instruction in flying. The first time a Cadet fly’s they are taught the basic controls and manoeuvres. On each subsequent flight they are taught a new skill and gain more experience.
Cadet Adam Starzonek was gliding for the first time. He said of his flight, “It was a great feeling. I enjoyed it the most when I had hands on control.”
